roxygen: Beginning with the tag in the early 1990s, L’ATLAS went on to study Arabic calligraphy with classic and modern masters in Morocco, Egypt and Syria, taking particular inspiration from traditional Kufic calligraphy – the oldest calligraphic form of the Arabic scripts. The artist’s work has evolved towards a nameless writing which unites elements of painting and the tag with calligraphy. The exhibition Punitions runs through May 28, 2011 at Berlin’s Skalitzers Contemporary Art gallery and features a series of paintings inspired by the punishments of contemporary graffiti and the traditional form of Kufic calligraphy.
